The ACT is a college admissions test written by ACT, Inc. and accepted by universities across the United States, on equal footing with the SAT. Most students take it in grade 11 or 12.
It has four multiple-choice sections — English, Math, Reading and Science — plus an optional 40-minute writing test. All 215 questions are answered in about 2 hours 55 minutes, so the ACT is primarily a test of speed with accuracy.
Each section is scored from 1 to 36, and your composite score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest whole number. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.
| Section | Questions | Time | Per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 75 | 45 min | 36 sec |
| Math | 60 | 60 min | 60 sec |
| Reading | 40 | 35 min | 53 sec |
| Science | 40 | 35 min | 53 sec |

What's on the ACT?
Four sections, back to back, with an optional essay at the end.
English
- Punctuation, grammar and sentence structure
- Rhetorical skills — strategy, organization, style
- Underlined portions inside short passages
Study tip: Shortest grammatically correct answer usually wins. Read the whole sentence before choosing.
Math
- Pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra
- Coordinate and plane geometry
- A handful of trigonometry questions, five answer choices
Study tip: One minute per question. If you can't start a problem in 15 seconds, mark it and come back.
Reading
- Four passages: prose fiction, social science, humanities, natural science
- Main idea, detail, inference, vocabulary in context
- About 8 minutes 45 seconds per passage
Study tip: Skim for structure, then answer with line references. Never rely on memory for detail questions.
Science
- Data representation — tables and graphs
- Research summaries — experimental design
- Conflicting viewpoints — comparing two hypotheses
Study tip: It's a reading test with graphs. Go to the figures first; you rarely need outside science knowledge.
How to prepare for the ACT
Take a timed section first
The ACT is won on pacing. A timed section tells you exactly where the clock beats you.
Set per-passage time targets
Reading and Science reward a fixed rhythm. Practise finishing each passage in under nine minutes.
Fix the mistakes you repeat
Review every miss and log whether it was a concept gap, a misread question, or a rushed error.
Answer every question
There is no wrong-answer penalty, so guess strategically on anything you leave — never blank.
