What is the ISEE?

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) is an admissions test used by independent and private schools across the United States. It is created by ERB and taken by students applying to grades 5 through 12.

There are three levels: Lower (grades 5-6), Middle (grades 7-8), and Upper (grades 9-12). The section structure is the same across levels — only the difficulty changes. Benkyou Academy offers free practice tests for the Middle and Upper levels.

Every question on Benkyou's ISEE practice tests is an original, exam-style item — not a copy of a released test paper. You get instant scoring and a worked explanation for each answer.

What's on the ISEE?

The Middle and Upper Level ISEE have four multiple-choice sections and one essay. Here's what each one tests.

Verbal Reasoning

20 questions
20 min
  • Synonyms — choose the word closest in meaning
  • Sentence completion — pick the word that fits the context
  • Vocabulary tested in context, not as isolated definitions

Study tip: Build vocabulary daily with flashcards. Learn Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes to decode unfamiliar words.

Quantitative Reasoning

18 questions
22 min
  • Reasoning with numbers, ratios, and proportions
  • Estimation and quantitative comparisons
  • Less pure computation, more thinking about what the numbers mean

Study tip: Practice translating word problems into equations. Many questions test logic, not calculation.

Reading Comprehension

18 questions
25 min
  • Short nonfiction and literary passages
  • Main idea, supporting detail, and inference questions
  • Vocabulary-in-context and organization questions

Study tip: Read the passage first, then the questions. Underline key transitions and topic sentences as you read.

Mathematics Achievement

25 questions
30 min
  • Computation and applied math at grade level
  • Fractions, decimals, percents, integers, and equations
  • Geometry, measurement, data, and probability

Study tip: Review formulas for area, volume, and probability. Work cleanly so you can check your steps.

Essay (Upper Level)

1 prompt
30 min
  • A timed writing prompt based on a short statement
  • Not scored by Benkyou — sent to schools as a writing sample
  • Tested on organization, clarity, and support

Study tip: Practice structuring a 4-5 paragraph essay in 30 minutes: introduction, two or three body paragraphs, conclusion.
