What is the SAT?

The SAT is a college admissions test written by the College Board and taken by high school students, usually in grades 11 and 12. Since 2024 it is fully digital, taken on a laptop or tablet in about 2 hours and 14 minutes.

The test has two sections — Reading & Writing and Math — each split into two modules. It is section-adaptive: your performance on the first module decides how hard the second module is, which is why accuracy early in a section matters so much.

Scores run from 400 to 1600, with each section scored from 200 to 800. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so you should answer all 98 questions. A calculator, including the built-in Desmos graphing calculator, is allowed throughout Math.

What's on the digital SAT?

Two sections, two adaptive modules each. Here's what they test.

Reading & Writing

27 questions
32 min per module
  • Information & ideas — main idea, evidence, inference, data from graphs
  • Craft & structure — vocabulary in context, purpose, tone, text structure
  • Expression of ideas & Standard English conventions — transitions, grammar, punctuation

Study tip: Read the question before the short passage. Most items have one clearly supportable answer — find the words in the text that prove it.

Math

22 questions
35 min per module
  • Algebra — linear equations, systems, inequalities
  • Advanced math — quadratics, polynomials, exponents, functions
  • Problem solving & data analysis, plus geometry and trigonometry

Study tip: Translate words into equations first, then solve. Use the built-in graphing calculator for systems and function questions.
